Three Little Kittens

            This is a short story about three kittens who at first, lost their mittens. Since they had lost their mittens, mother said that they couldn’t have any pie. Of course, the kittens wanted their pie so they found their mittens. Mother was so happy with the kittens she let them eat their pie, but while eating the pie the kittens got their mittens all dirty. This made mother upset again, to make mother happy, the kittens went and washed their mittens, making mother happy again. At the end of the story all the kittens smell a tasty mouse. Meow!


This is just a very simple and fun story for children to read. I would think this book is for children in about 4-7 years of age. It’s from a folk tale, but it also rhymes! This is something students may even be able to memorize. This could definitely be a book to help students learn to read.

Freedom Over Me By: Ashley Bryan Historical Fiction             This book is based on property to be sold from the Fairchilds’ estate. It lists hogs, cattle, a handmill, and men, women and children. Only gender, name and price are given to the 11 slaves are noted in the appraisal of the estate. The author lovingly gives humanity to each of these slaves mentioned. She gives them ages, relationships, talents and dreams.             Each slave is given two double page spreads of beautiful artwork and poems to describe them, and to share their dreams of how they one day may impact the world. Wee Rhymes: Baby’s First Poetry Book By: Jane Yolen Illustrated by: Jane Dyer                         This is a collection of poems and nursery rhymes for children. Two women who know how important bedtime poems and nursery rhymes are have put them into a book altogether. There are some old mother goose favorites inside this collection, but most are written by Jane Yolen. All of the poems are about baby topics like belly buttons, kisses, and hugs.             The illustrations in this book are done beautifully by Jane Dyer. They have a wonderful old timey feel to them. There is use of beautiful watercolor and pastels, which are very pleasing to the eye.
