The Polar Bear

This books gives children tons of facts about polar bears. From how they swim in the ocean, to what they eat. This is an informational book that gives interesting facts about polar bears, and how they are important to the environment.


This would be a good book if students are doing a project over animals or the Artic. This book is recommended for 1st grade, but I think it would be great for ages up to 3rd grade.

The Neverending Story Michael Ende Fantasy This novel begins with the hero, Bastian Balthazar Bux, he steals a book and hides in the school attic to dive into. He has an unhappy life, and wants to escape it. So he ends up skipping class after getting caught up in the story. The book is about a place named Fantastica, and the Nothings are trying to conquer it. Atreyu and his friend Falkor and other amazing characters search for a way to stop the Nothings, but they can’t find anything to stop them. Only a human can save Fantastica by believing in the book and the place called fantastica. They would become the Childlike empress.             Bastian becomes this hero, he believes and goes inside the novel. He creates the book by his wishes for the next half of the novel. When he does this, he finds himself making foolish and selfish wishes. When he realizes this, he decides to return to his former world where he returns the stolen book, and returns home to his father.

Freedom Over Me By: Ashley Bryan Historical Fiction             This book is based on property to be sold from the Fairchilds’ estate. It lists hogs, cattle, a handmill, and men, women and children. Only gender, name and price are given to the 11 slaves are noted in the appraisal of the estate. The author lovingly gives humanity to each of these slaves mentioned. She gives them ages, relationships, talents and dreams.             Each slave is given two double page spreads of beautiful artwork and poems to describe them, and to share their dreams of how they one day may impact the world. For example we have Bacus who works in metal work for the Fairchilds’, but his dream is that every time he   hits the metal, it is a blow of anger and outrage. I had never heard of this book before this assignment, but man am I glad I have found it. This is so beautiful. Giving life to the once looked at as lifeless. Wee Rhymes: Baby’s First Poetry Book By: Jane Yolen Illustrated by: Jane Dyer                         This is a collection of poems and nursery rhymes for children. Two women who know how important bedtime poems and nursery rhymes are have put them into a book altogether. There are some old mother goose favorites inside this collection, but most are written by Jane Yolen. All of the poems are about baby topics like belly buttons, kisses, and hugs.             The illustrations in this book are done beautifully by Jane Dyer. They have a wonderful old timey feel to them. There is use of beautiful watercolor and pastels, which are very pleasing to the eye. Also, Jane Dyer does a wonderful job of creating diversity within the pictures. There are children of all color and culture within the book, making it a wonderful read for all children.             I absolutely love the old timey feel of this book; it brings me back to the times my Mom read to
