Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer

This book is about a civil right icon, Fannie Lou Hamer. She
was brutally mistreated her entire life, but despite it all, flourished. She
was beaten and almost killed, but never backed down. She was a huge piece of
Democratic National Convention, where her speech aired on national TV. Her
speech influenced many to support the Freedom Democrats. She says, “All my life
I’ve been sick and tired. Now I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.”
This picture book is truly inspiring. It shows some of the
hardship that so many had no choice but to face. This book is meant for older
children just based on the context. Since it is talking about slavery and
freedom I believe it would be best delivered and received over the age of 3rd
grade.
